— that single line does more characterisation than the paragraph before it. She's patient, inward, and already carrying the weight of inheritance. My one note: the floorboard creak arrives a beat too early to build dread. Hold it.

You're right that it reads as flat. Protectiveness without a wound underneath it is just a character trait, not a motive. Given what you've established about the Night of Sealing — what if he was there? Not as a witness, but close enough that he could have done something, and didn't.
